Standing in the Virginia Gardens area of northwestern Miami, the busy Miami International Airport (MIA) is located off the US-112 highway (Airport Expressway). To the south of Miami Airport, the US-836 highway (Dolphin Expressway) skirts the southern edge, past the Blue Lagoon Lake.

Useful points of reference near to the airport include Miami Springs and Hialeah to the north, the Costa Greens Golf Club and Miami International Mall to the west, and Coral Gables to the south. Many major roads surround the complex, such as NW 36th Street / Doral Boulevard on the northern border, and the NW 42nd Avenue on the eastern side, nearby the Grapeland Heights Park and the Melreese Golf Course.
